Kodungallore (English: Kodungallore or Cranganore) is an ancient town on the southwestern border of Thrissur district. This place, which is full of streams, water bodies and rivers, has the Arabian Sea on its western border. Kodungallore was the capital of the Cheraman Perumals. The first sanctuaries and temples of the Jewish, Christian and Islamic religions were established here. The famous poet Kunjikuttan Thampuran Kodungallore lived in Kodungallore. The Cheraman Juma Masjid, the first Muslim mosque in India, is believed to be the place where St. Thomas first landed, the ancient Sree Kurumba Bhagavathy Temple built by Cheran Chenguttuvan, the center of Shakteya worship in Kerala and the origin of Bhagavathy, the Bharani here, and the Kodungallore Thalapoli festival. The old names were Vanchi, Muziris, Muchiri, Mucharipattanam, Shingli, Mahodayapuram, Makothai, and Krankannur. It also has other names like Kotilingapuram and Kodum Kaliyur.
